Season 18 of the Sedona Poetry Slam opens with a twist. The first slam of the year is staged on the set of “The Dead Quilters Society” the comedy playing at the Mary D. Fisher Theatre that weekend and the next.
A poetry slam is a series of high-energy three-minute one-person performances judged by five members of the audience chosen at random. Performance poets come from Phoenix Tucson Prescott and Flagstaff to compete against local poets from Sedona and Cottonwood college poets from Northern Arizona University and youth poets from Verde Valley high schools. All styles are welcome from narrative and hip-hop to political rants and confessional verse.
Poets compete for a $75 grand prize and $25 second-place prize with three original poems each under three minutes. No props costumes or musical accompaniment are permitted. Email foxthepoet@yahoo.com to sign up in advance or sign up at the door the day of the show. Poets should purchase a ticket in case the roster fills before they arrive.
